چکیده

The aim of this thesis was to develop a novel behavioural technique to disrupt parietal function in order to induce top-down cortical modulation of low-level brain structures, namely the brainstem mediated vestibuloocular reflex and the early visual cortex. The premise of the technique was based upon using stimuli that engaged overlapping neuronal networks. To this end, we employed a technique that involved concurrent vestibular activation and viewing of bistable perceptual visual stimuli or performing visualised spatial attention tasks. The thesis presents data that shows the ability of this technique to induce a handedness related cortical modulation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex and modulation of the early visual cortex. Subsequently we applied trans-cranial direct stimulation to directly disrupt parietal inter-hemispheric balance in order to induce an asymmetrical modulation of the VOR and propose a revised computational model for vestibular processing. The results from these experiments present the first behavioural demonstration that vestibular cortical processing is strongly lateralised to the non-dominant hemisphere. We propose that this technique developed and validated in this thesis can be used to further probe and investigate cognitive parietal function such as numerical cognition and human decision making.

Functional-anatomic correlates of memory retrieval that suggest nontraditional processing roles for multiple distinct regions within posterior parietal cortex.

Current theories of posterior parietal cortex (PPC) function emphasize space-based attention and motor intention. Imaging studies of long-term memory have demonstrated PPC activation during successful memory retrieval. Here, we explored the relationship between memory processes and classical notions of PPC function. Study 1 investigated old-new recognition using picture and sound stimuli to tes...

Improvement of Working Memory Performance by Parietal Upper Alpha Neurofeedback Training

Working memory (WM) is a part of human memory, the ability to maintain and manipulate information. WM performance is impaired in some neurological and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and ADHD. Neurofeedback training is a self-regulation method which can be used to improve WM performance by changing related EEG parameters. In this paper we used neurofeedback training to improve WM pe...

Distinct anatomical subtypes of the behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia: a cluster analysis study.

The behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by changes in personality and behaviour. It is typically associated with frontal lobe atrophy, although patterns of atrophy are heterogeneous. The objective of this study was to examine case-by-case variability in patterns of grey matter atrophy in subjects with the behavioural variant o...

A Cognitive Neuropsychological and Psychophysiological Investigation of a Patient Who Exhibited an Acute Exacerbated Behavioural Response during Innocuous Somatosensory Stimulation and Movement

We report findings from a cognitive neuropsychological and psychophysiological investigation of a patient who displayed an exacerbated acute emotional expression during movement, innocuous, and aversive somatosensory stimulation. The condition developed in the context of non-specific white matter ischaemia along with abnormalities in the cortical white matter of the left anterior parietal lobe,...

The role of human parietal cortex in attention networks.

The parietal cortex has been proposed as part of the neural network for guiding spatial attention. However, it is unclear to what degree the parietal cortex contributes to the attentional modulations of activities of the visual cortex and the engagement of the frontal cortex in the attention network. We recorded behavioural performance and haemodynamic responses using functional MRI from a pati...
